This is exactly what I expect when I go to a diner! The food was honestly simple but so so so delicious and was what I wanted from a diner experience. My partner took me here because he knows I enjoy a good diner and when I found out this is one of the oldest diners in LA I knew I had to go! (And I was not disappointed). Our waitress, Anna, was one of the sweetest people I've ever met and was very attentive. Our coffee was also never empty or even left half full, as someone was always there to fill it up. If you are looking for something upscale or "trendy" I wouldn't say this is the place for you but the simplicity and overall feel is that of an old diner so if you enjoy those types of vibes like do, then this is your place!!! (Even has regulars that were bickering and ... that really is a part of the vibe of an old diner, just added to it for me personally)

We were seated promptly and the time that we came was not during prime time hours (breakfast lunch or dinner times). The waitress was friendly and accommodating of our needs. I ordered the hot pastrami sandwich on rye and side of coleslaw. The pastrami was on the lean side but still very tasty. The coleslaw was also good. My daughter who doesn't like pastrami ordered breakfast (scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage and toast). They give you kosher pickles to eat before your meal arrives (to also eat with your sandwich). I also tried the potato knish to see if it was like the ones I used to eat in New York. The potato filling tasted like the filling in the NY knishes, but the shell part was different. They had a deli counter of goodies including some desserts but I was too stuffed to even look at the contents. I will come back again when I am craving pastrami while visiting Los Angeles.

Canter's is one of the places in L.A. that everyone must try at least once. You'll want to come here instead of a trendy sandwich spot or pop-up if you're visiting, and if you're a local, you probably stop in or order delivery often. The sandwiches are good. The dinner plates are good. There's a good drinks/cocktails selection, and an adjacent bar if you want more (Kibitz Room). There are many photo ops (the autumnal leaves ceiling, Guns N' Roses items on display, the iconic front façade). Service is typical of a diner - terse, prompt, skilled. There's a free parking lot on the side.

Years. For years, we've talked about giving Canter's a go. But, it's in LA and we are most definitely not. Thank you Jesus. But, we gave it a shot recently, finally. First off, the joint is historic. Not, "Pyramids of Giza-historic," but LA Historic. Since 1931? And, it has that old school feel. Kind of like that old worked-in baseball glove. Just feels comfortable. I am sure the walls have plenty of stories to tell. Went on a Sunday. No crowd. Parking is on the metered street (good luck) or in the lot next door, free with validation. Extensive menu. Typical deli offerings. We went with the Pastrami Reuben. Excellent. Fries were ok, onion rings were ok. House ranch was good. Pickles were decent. Bakery is nice. Got a cookie (peanut butter) and a pastry (cherry) which were good. Service was solid and their prices are fair for what you get. They have a tiny bar with an equally tiny stage attached next door for booze and live music? In general, the place is dimly lit, tables and cushioned booths. It doesn't gleam. It's well worn. Canter's is one of those old LA joints that you should probably be required to try if you're a Socal eater. Give it a go.

Old school Jewish deli, the likes of which you'd find in NYC. Large dining room in the back, on the dark side, but it's all about the food. We ordered a cornucopia of items from the bakery; it was just too hard to choose. The woman preparing our order was patient and conscious of ensuring our items would not break when packaging. Great interaction and customer service. - florentine cookies: crispy - rugualeh: we got a variety. All flaky and well filled - sour cream cheesecake: light cheesecake and perfect tang of sour cream. so good. - apple babka: light and a nice balance of cake and filling. - caramel babka: sticky caramel and crunchy exterior. Exquisite. - flaky pastry cookie. This was a puff pastry which was caramelized. We ordered the one with nuts . Incredible texture and perfect with a cup of coffee or tea. We also ordered bagels and deli counter items to take home. - whitefish and tuna salads. The whitefish salad was incredible. Light smoke, creamy, bits of celery. The half pint size was generously filled and lasted for three lunches and I don't skimp on the schmear! Tuna was also tasty and perfect for a tuna melt. - pastrami. Great flavor and perfect ratio of fat and meat. - bagels had a light texture with a good chew, and toasted up beautifully. This is a must go!

The deli was really good. The bakery was good. The sandwich was OK was corn beef, but it was kind of lean and they didn't have enough of liquid from the coleslaw so the sandwich on the Kaiser roll just wasn't that impressive OK but the bakery was really good that's why I'm gonna get the four points, I would continue to go. I'm not sure if I would go or anything like that. OK thanks This is not their fault so I'm not deleting any points for it. The doctor Brown now only comes in a can. I have been drinking Dr. Brown's all of my life, the diet, cherry black cherry I will be stopping drinking it because the bottles taste different. The bottles were much better .

** If you check-in on Yelp you get 2 free cookies! ** We stopped by in the late afternoon on a Sunday and were seated immediately. It's a huge space with ample indoor seating and a parking lot that is free for 1.5 hr with validation. Our server was so kind and took our order quickly. The food came out fast!! I tried the hot pastrami sandwich, which was excellent!! The bread was super soft and it was a huge serving of pastrami. The pickles are complimentary and one of the best parts of the meal. Don't forget the spicy mustard! The potato salad was really good as well. We also got chocolate chip cookies as part of the Yelp deal but they were more like scones, kind of dry but would be good with some sort of warm drink! I would definitely come back to try more sandwiches and their breakfast!! It was such a homey, cozy vibe and the staff were very friendly. Thank you!!
